CINCINNATI, Ohio – The bats were on fire Thursday as the Wilberforce University baseball team scored in every inning, completing an HBCUAC doubleheader sweep of Oakwood at the Gendell Family Field inside the Reds Urban Youth Academy.

GAME ONE: WILBERFORCE 22, OAKWOOD 10

Senior Beau Spears, sophomore Christopher Alcantara-Diaz, and freshman Junior Veras Vasquez delivered a historic performance, combining to go a perfect 11-for-11 at the plate with 15 RBI and 10 runs scored to power the Bulldogs in the opener.

Both teams scored in each of the first five innings, but Wilberforce seized control with an explosive eight-run third inning. The Bulldogs plated four runs in the first, two in the second, eight in the third, five in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two more in the sixth.

Veras Vasquez went 3-for-3 with a double, two home runs, a career-high six RBI, and three runs scored. Alcantara-Diaz matched a career-high with six RBI, finishing 4-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two runs scored. Spears also went 4-for-4, adding a double, five runs scored, three RBI, and a career-best five stolen bases—highlighting a season-high 13 steals for the Bulldogs.

Freshman Brandon Bell provided a spark off the bench, going 3-for-4 with a run scored in his most productive outing of the season. Senior Joe Mendy added a double, a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored.

On the mound, senior Xavier Thompson (4-2) turned in a complete game, allowing four earned runs (10 total) on seven hits while striking out three.

GAME TWO: WILBERFORCE 15, OAKWOOD 7

Bell stayed hot in the nightcap, tying his career high with three hits. The freshman infielder finished 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI to help secure the sweep.

Wilberforce continued its offensive surge, scoring three runs in the first inning, single runs in the second and third, a six-run fourth, three in the fifth, and one in the sixth.

Alcantara-Diaz and Veras Vasquez each added two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI in the win.

Freshman Craig Smith (2-0) earned the victory with his first career complete game, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits while recording one strikeout.
