Wilberforce Adds Flag Football
Wilberforce University President Dr. Vann R. Newkirk and Director of Athletics Roosevelt Barnes proudly announce the launch of women's flag football as an official intercollegiate sport beginning in the 2026–27 academic year, representing a major expansion of athletic opportunities for women and a bold step into one of collegiate athletics' most exciting emerging sports.
Flag football continues to experience explosive growth across the United States. Recognized as one of the nation's fastest-expanding collegiate sports, at least 55 NAIA institutions are expected to sponsor varsity and club flag football programs by the 2026–27 season, demonstrating the sport's rapid momentum and competitive appeal. Moreover, flag football will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, heightening the sport's visibility and worldwide prestige.
Seventeen states now officially sanction girls' flag football at the high school level, and more than 80 Ohio high schools offer opportunities in the sport — creating a rich recruiting environment for Wilberforce's new program.
The Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference remains one of the state's leading sponsors of girls' flag football competition, underscoring the strong regional talent pipeline.
To lead this historic effort, Wilberforce University has named Earnest Wilson as the inaugural Head Coach of Women's Flag Football. Currently serving as the Director of Football Operations "Coach" Wilson will immediately begin recruiting, with plans to sign an initial class of approximately 25–30 student athletes to form the foundation of the competitive roster.
"We are thrilled to present more opportunities for women to compete at the collegiate level," said Director of Athletics Roosevelt Barnes. "Flag football's rapid growth allows Wilberforce to position itself at the forefront of this emerging athletic movement. This addition not only enhances our sports offerings but also creates new pathways for prospective student-athletes to pursue academic goals, athletic excellence, and lifelong community impact."
President Dr. Vann R. Newkirk added, "This is an exciting moment in Wilberforce's athletic history, expanding opportunities, elevating women's sports, and advancing our commitment to bold leadership and empowerment. We celebrate the growth of flag football and look forward to seeing our Bulldogs excel on and off the field."
The creation of women's flag football at Wilberforce aligns with the University's mission to foster inclusive excellence, student success, and athletic distinction while building a vibrant campus culture with opportunities for all.
